Reading your journal was a pleasure and it brought many memories back to this 62 year old Yank. My best friend John, who passed away nearly twenty years ago, and I traveled for three months in 1972 through Western Europe. We started in Oslo and ended in London. It was the "trip of a lifetime" for two boys from the Bronx. And it turned out to be the first of seven trips to Europe for me, including a six month stint of living in the UK. Most of those were taken with my former wife. In 1995, I accompanied another childhood friend on a voyage "across the pond." I was very enthusiastic but he said my mood seemed to change once we landed in Rome and began touring. He would often find me staring off into space. Too many ghosts I guess because I vowed never to return. It's strange how I remember almost nothing from that final trip. So thanks are in order for bringing the experiences of my first trip back to me with your journal. Those memories are vibrant, happy and funny. I'm glad you shared the events and pictures of your trip. Never did get to Scotland when we lived in the UK. It's one of my regrets. Wishing you guys the best! Chuck Anthony

the Castle Sant'Angelo was built atop the great roman emperor Hadrian's mausoleum. not only was it a good place near the vatican to fortify, but by building atop a monument that represents the greatest of rome, the pope was making a statement about how great he was as well.

The boys are back in the UK arrived at Niall's grandparents near Nottingham about 7.00 p.m today Friday and should be back home in a few days. Simon will finish up dating his blog in the next day or so. Well done lads.

Great pictures of Switzerland. If you look on the Switzerland journal page it only shows 6 but if you check out all pictures there are in fact 25 including a few of Strassburg. Mountains haven't changed much since I was there in 1966!!

The travellers were leaving Paris on Sunday but were unable to get the night train to Milan as it was full so were going via Basle. They were then spending 2 or 3 days in Switzerland camping. Hoping to be in a hostel in Rome on Thursday , so hopefully we should be hearing from them again soon.
