Hi Eric.
Have read your blogs now and then and found them very entertaining and enlightening. One of your latest ones on poverty and corruption is interesting because it seems to be the same in the Dominican as well. We bought a place down there last year and when we go there we see evidence of the mis management of funds all over the place. Your description of the roads could be our road down there. And yet with all the corruption and poverty somehow the people that live there survive with a smile on their face. We take so much for granted in North America - and get annoyed if the power goes out or the hot water doesn't come when we turn the tap on. Once you live in a third world country you learn to appreciate what you have here...we just got back from India and so the 'inconvenience' of poverty is still fresh in our minds. Take care and know that you have made a difference while you have been over there. |

It's me which of couse is you. Did you/I see any wildlife at least. What did we see. I/we have read that it was a mofo to get to Northern Cameroon. I/we are glad that we went.
I/we bought you a necklace/choker from a witch in La Paz today. From a good witch that is. |

Nice last entry, you're GOLD... comforting the afflicted and afflict the comfortable... you know where I'm coming from. Here's a quote that came to mind regarding your journal entry:
"...the majority of politicians, on the evidence available to us, are interested not in truth but in power and maintenance of that power. To maintain that power it is essential that people remain in ignorance, that they live in ignorance of that truth, even the truth of their own lives. What surrounds us therefore is a vast tapestry of lies, upon which we feed."
- Harold Printer 1930- 2008, from his acceptance speech for the 2005 Nobel Prize in Literature

I just read a British guy's blog from your neighborhood in Bamenda, Cameroon, and I suggested that he should pack his bags and bugger off, but I suggest that you should enjoy your stay. Why? You are actually growing and learning from your experience, unlike the know-it-all, whining condescending ourman. |

Very interesting post Eric. The word "poor" has been getting lots of thought from me lately. We went to the Dominican last month and a comment about the "poor" there has had me thinking since. We'll have to have a good long chat about it when you're back. A question for you: What's medical care consist of there? Is it available at all? |

Amigo, Just spent the last 20 minutes at work looking at your photos, the poor puppy. Read your latest journal entry too; it's like a groovy little portal into another world... You realize you'll never fit into Western culture again? ...Not that you ever really did, but now it'll be even less so. Or maybe you can have your Cake and eat it too, "They laugh they make money/He's got a gold watch/ She's got a silk dress/ and healthy breasts/ That bounce/ On his italian leather sofa... Can I put that on here? |

Your holidays sounded very nice Eric. Glad you were able to get away for a bit. Nice pics from your trip too! I watched 'An Inconvient Truth' last week...so when you mentioned the visit to a pygmy village, it made me wonder what sorts of changes they may notice living so close to the earth. And what they think is causing it! Your emails always remind me that we are a global village. Anyhoo, I'm off to jump in my oversized gas sucking suv to go do the recycling...just kidding :) Can't wait to hear the next installment... |
