Portugal Journal
Some photos from my Jan. 2004 Portugal vacation with W.
Click on 'pictures' and then click on each thumbnail photo to see the larger photo with my caption. (The photos are of course not all from Jan. 1, 2004, but it was easier to post them that way.) They are sort-of-chronological...we were there for just over one week.
Some of the pictures could be clearer, I know, and I am happy to send you a more detailed photo via email if you want.
There's a range of the expected tourist photos... except the one of the aftermath of a forest fire: the Algarve's inland forests were devastated late this summer...we drove through quite a lot of it, and were stunned.
We visited two ossuaries ... Catholic burial places made out of human bones: we saw two, which had been part of monasteries active till the end of the 19th c. The picture shows that the walls of the small room are made of bones (largely legs and arms) laid one on top of another & studded with the occasional skull. Memento mori.
W. took most of the pictures, and they're good. We had a real mix of weather--cloudy, sunny--and were out and about all day long, so the quality of light reflects that.
We especially liked the western coast, where the cliffs are. And took a lot of photos in Portimao, for no special reason, and had some nice days when we forgot to take any photos at all.
