I finished adding journal entries and 210 photos with witty captions from my 1991 trip with a college jazz band to Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Enjoy this "blast from the past"!
The remainder of my stories and photos are: My detailed journal and 395 of the 900 photos I took while visiting Europe alone [sadly] from June 25 through July 17, 2007.
I visited, in order: Ireland, Hungary, Romania, Hungary, Austria, Germany, Finland, Sweden and Ireland.
Starting from Los Angeles in the U.S., I took: 7 separate plane flights / 10 separate train trips 1 overnight ferry sailing / 1 intercity bus ride
This doesn't include my numerous commuter train, subway, local bus, streetcar and taxi rides. I highly recommend EurailPass and the purchase of 24 or 48 hour passes for local mass transit. This turned out to be quite an education in public transportation, since I normally drive a car everywhere like most southern Californians. My last plane trip had been "pre-9/11" in the year 2000. I took the first subway ride of my life in Budapest (quite a thrill!) and my first significant train ride in nearly 50 years on my trip from Hungary to Romania. Train service throughout the parts of Europe I visited was excellent and very uncrowded. Local mass transit was also excellent, but often packed with people. By the way, taxi fares in Romania are very cheap, but the drivers can be incredibly reckless. Also, watch your wallet in Romania-- I was pickpocketed in Arad! (See that story in my journal.)
In 3 weeks of vacation, I walked more than I normally do in a whole year and-- I LOST 10 POUNDS!! | | | |
