Well hello everyone.
Here's a bit of an update for the week.
Last saturday me and my friends went to a club in bridgetown called Xtreme...i was wearing cut off shorts but a nice shirt and heels. However, the bouncer actually stopped me and said that my shorts were too short, that they either needed to be longer or it needed to be a skirt. He let me in this time, but next time he said he woudln't. I never thought a club would stop a girl because of what she was wearing.
Anyways, the club was lots of fun with free drinks all night. We had to party hard before school started and did just that. There are some pictures i posted everyone can get a glimpse of the night. Clubs in barbados stay open until about 4am and afterwards we went to a place to eat called the Tavern. It's open 24hours and is really nice. The inside looks like a sports bar and grill in california. Tv's all over playing sports and nice big roomy booths. The food was pretty good, i ate really delicious fish and chips.
We stayed there song enough, that when i looked at the window at about 530 am it was already bright outside. It was a long night but lots of fun.
Sunday i went to a jagged edge, 112 and Joe concert at the barbados national stadium. The bajan women went nuts and were ruthless. they would have done anything to go back stage or to catch one of the band members sweaty towel or shirt. it was gross actually. In the midst of everything and all the commotion my bag got ripped!! i was annoyed and decided to get off the lawn and sit down in the stands after that. I asked this guy why everyone was going nuts over these guys and said it was because american artists only come to barbados about twice a year and there are always huge gaps like year gaps before another time comes when an american artist shows up . so apparently this jagged edge, 112 and joe concert was REALLY big for the bajan people.
Monday school started and it has been going well. Slow so far but it'll pick up soon,
The women and some men where suits or really dress up for class, like business attire. I was also amazaed at how many students are way older. The custom for the carribean people is that they must go to a community college for two years after high school and then when they come to the university they stay here for only about three years. So thier time in school is 5 years total mandatory instead of the four years we do at the states. Not everyone will start thier education after high school either so many people are in their thirites and first years.
I've also noticed how rude students can be. I was in my french class and this girls phone starts to ring. Instead of quickly getting it to turn it off she takes her time, answers it and in a normal tone tells whoever called her that she's in class. the lecturer didn't seem too bothered by it but I was amazed. Ive noticed that in any quite place, the computer labs or library, they don't turn their cell phone to silent and just let it ring a few times before bothering to pick it up. It's different.
I also noticed that people here hiss when trying to get your attention. Instead of saying psst, for example, they say annoyingly ssssss. the first time someone did it to me i was a little taken a aback but now it's okay.
Lastly, the book store. I will never again complain about the short comings of the bookstore at Davis or any other school. the bookstore here is the size of a small apartment with very minimal resources. A lot of the books i need for class have just been ordered and when i ask the employees when it wil arrive she said she didn't know but it would sometime before the end of the semester. i might just have to order them on-line im thinking.
Ohter than that my classes have been pretty chill and i'm stoked for school to start full force.
Night, Friday night me and my roomates are throwing a potluck at our house. We invitied people from the dorms and our friends who go to UWI and live off campus as well as other people we met while we've been here. It will be fun time i'm thinking. Here the bajans say brig a bottle and come lime when they are throwing a potluck.
Last night we actually got ABC in on TV and say the raiders and patriots game...it was nice to watch some american football on TV. afterwards i got picked up by my friend Bexx and Rodney and wen to campus for a beer social. Yes, we are allowed to have alcohol here on campus. the student guild throws a party every thursday night and everyone was drinking and dancing and socializing it . It was cool, but i went home early because i'm trying to get over my sinus infection and broncitis, boo.
this morning was unbelieveable. i woke up to the loudest hardest tropical rainfall of my life. the thunder was so loud i thought it could shake our house. I was nice to hear the rain and nice to have things cool down.
that's all for today.
hope all is well with everyone.
write me if you can i love hearing from everyone.
take care
