I must admit, I'm watching ESPN right now on the Scotts' satellite while using their wireless internet. While that does give me hope that the Michigan vs. Notre Dame game may be broadcast here, I'm not exactly kicking this backpacking trip off with a new cultural experience. The Scotts are family friends of mine that are living in Shanghai now on an assignment for GM. We are staying here for three nights before we head off on a tour that will take us down the Yangtze river and eventually to Hong Kong. They live in a beautiful neighborhood not too far from downtown Shanghai with fellow ex-pats from all over the world. The flight was 12 hours direct to Tokyo, and then a little over 2 hours from there to Shanghai. Unfortunately my coach seat was broken and unable to recline, and the sound wasn't working for the in-flight entertainment. Susan and I did feel lucky though because the plane was far from full and we sprawled out on our own row of 4 seats! Also we were compensated with 5,000 miles for the sound problems from Northwest. I am writing this posting alone because Susan is doing much better with the time change than I am. It's about 6:15am right now and I've been awake for an hour. Sportscenter is about to come on and I need to make my picks for fantasy college football, so it's time to wrap up. Susan and I would love to hear from you when you get the chance, and please make suggestions about our traveljournal as well. This is our first time with any sort of internet posting, and I'm guessing we could use some pointers on keeping things interesting and entertaining. Please also let me know if you would like to be taken off the automatic email list. You are all signed up for the list right now and thus you will receive an email each time we make a posting. No hard feelings about being taken off the list, the link will always be the same so you can check on your own anytime you like without clogging your inbox. Later!
