The hostel manager just told me that the car we rented, a jeep like Subaru, is not really insurable, and that if we hit an animal or something like some of his guests did recently we will have to pay a large amount, sooo..... Cost of this little jeep thingy is about $75 per day, and you have to drive slow as to not tip it over. Plus they put about 10,000 on your credit card to cover insurance....
National Park fees went up this summer unfortunately, so we will have to pay a large entry fee plus huge daily rate plus campground fees to observe some of the densest animal populations in Africa. Will report specifics when we return in a few days. May not save much over going on a guided safari, but at least we will be able to stop when we want, etc......
Met a tour guide from the Netherlands here in the bar last night, and he gave us some suggestions for the segment of our tripo after our safari. Also in the bar was a guy from Germany who rode his dirt bike all the way down the west coast of Africa over a 14 month period. Definitely one of the most intrepid travelers we have ever met.
Anyway, I've got to walk to get the car while Laura packs up the tent and gets water. We are drinking tap water in cities, as all apparently is modern......
