It Is Born
- Pablo Neruda

Here, I came to the boundaries
where nothing needs to be said,
everything is learned with weather and ocean,
and the moon returned
with its lines silvered
and each time the shadow was broken
by the crash of a wave
and each day on the balcony of the sea
wings open, fire is born
and everything continues blue as the morning.

Pablo Neruda is even better in spanish.
Today I bought a book of his poems in english and spanish. Beautiful. Am feeling all sentimental and out of sorts and enjoying faffing around (this is a term I have learned from my english friends) in outdoor cafes reading poetry. The last 7 weeks have been so intense that I am now ready for a few days of complete vacation.

Today Quito is all sunshine and warmth and activity in Mariscal. Fridays are exciting. Everyone gearing up to go out and enjoy the weekend. I am calm and pensive. Getting ready to go home next week. Spending time alone.

I think my deoderant has stopped working. Damn this Ecuadorian deoderant!

Yesterday I went with my teacher to the Guyasimin museum. Guyasimin is the most famous artist in Ecuador. Was. He died a few years ago. He painted and sketched the most amazing subjects. His theme was the struggle of the indigenous and the mix of cultures-races beween the mestizo and indigenous. His paintings are unique, twisted, almost painful to look at. But fascinating. People here are very proud of him and everyone seems to have at least one copy of his work in their home. Will upload a couple photos from the museum.

Struggling to think of leaving and struggling to think of staying. Staying now is hard without my girlfriends. But worried about leaving all my spanish behind. Belisa and Anna, if you are reading this, you will have to make me practice with you as soon as I get back!!

So, Kenny, a guy from school, has moved into my hostal and is in Caroline`s old room. Not a good replacement. He has this thick Scottish accent which makes his english almost as bad as his spanish and has been regaling me with tales of his failed volunteership. Apparently he arrived, took one look at the cows he was supposed to milk, and left. I can`t say that I am feeling much sympathy. What did he think he would get when he signed up for a rural agriculture project???

Am off now. Promise am just about to upload photos.
Love,
Amanda
