Tea and Flowers

2002-07-19, Boracay Island, Philippines

I’m sitting on my deck drinking Earl Grey Tea, watching the morning unfold around me. A cute little Chickadee bird is providing me company and fond memories of many wonderful days of bird watching with my brother Kevin on his deck in Los Gatos. We have had some intense thunder and lightning. So loud and close it actually scared me, this is amazing because I love thunder and lightning… I thought of the young boy in Poltergeist counting out the seconds between the lightning and the thunder. Francis brought me new flowers this time he made a large fancy flower arrangement with seven kinds of tropical flowers including two kinds of tiny orchids, and lots of pretty foliage. He arranged it himself. Francis is a wealth of information and we have lots of discussions about everything from flowers to Filipino burying rituals. I definitely feel spoiled here. Last night I sat on the beach in total darkness (the power was out on Boracay) and watched an electrical storm over the island of Panay it was beautiful with the lightening reflecting in the sea. I’ve been working on plans to visit some other islands in the Philippines, researching destinations and how to get there: ferries, cruise ships, and flights. I think I’m going to visit Bohol Island and surrounding smaller Panglao Island (supposed to be a mini-Boracay). Both are located south of Cebu above Mindanao. I also plan to visit the islands of Malapascua and Bantayan off the northern tip of Cebu. By the time I leave I will have visited seven islands out of 7000 in the Philippines. Francis gave me two of the most delicious Asian oranges very juicy without seeds.
