Day 3

2005-08-04, Sydney, Australia

In only 3 days I have taken well over 100 pictures. Which, if you know how I like to just move along and leave the photo taking to someone else (Jeffrey!), you'll know that is a lot for me.

I'm finding this city to be very photogenic and am loving the opportunities to stop and take some really nice pictures. After all, not many people take a 2nd vacation to Australia so better get'em while I can. I am only uploading a few highlights so be on the lookout for a link to ALL the pics after my return.

Today's adventure was spectacular. I don't even think I can sum it all up in this journal but I'll try.

It was a tour to the Blue Mountains....which aren't really blue at all. In fact, they are quite green. But, from a distance, they appear blue due to the high concentration of eucaliptus trees which put off a gas that absorbs all colors except blue. So, the blue passess through and that is what you see from a distance - hence its name.

First stop was at Featherdale Wildlife center where we got to see Kola, emu, dingo, exotic birds, kangaroo, wallabee, tazmanian devil, etc., up close and hands on.

Along the way, we stopped at different places that allowed us some beautiful views of what is considered Australias' grand canyon. Some great vistas for sure.

We drove through some brush deep into the woods to get a look at kangeroo in the wild and were met by a flock of yellow tailed cockatoos that squawked and squeeled in the trees just above us while we sipped on some Billy Tea.

Finally we rode down the mountain in a huge condola and then back up the mountain in the worlds steepest inclined rail train. Yikes!

The drive back took us to the Olympic Park where the giant field and swimming complex are situated. This was just an incredible engineering marvel. Having lived in Salt Lake for the 2002 Olympics and knowing what the city did to accomodate the massive amounts of people their gave me a great appreciation for what Sydney must have gone through to accomplish the same in 2000.

The night ended with a night time cruise across the harbor. The Sydney skyline at night was truly illumanating. Unfortunately, my camera doesn't like taking pictures at night so I must train it. Ok, so I'm the one who needs night photo training!

Tomorrow I'm off to climb that bridge for real damn it!
