Only 48 hours to go...
I have nothing to do at work so thought I'd do a 'pre-adventure' thing. Have checked the weather in Calcutta for Sunday and it is hot hot hot without a rain cloud in sight! Of course considering it is also monsoon season this could change drastically, but I'm pretty sure that the gods are smiling (I am going out to work with the vulnerable, I'm sure that puts me into the 'good people' category and that my karma / the gods will reward me suitably).
So I'm almost all packed, have oodles of space left for any exciting souvenirs I spot, and looking at the state of the pound at the moment, I am going to be a millionaire over there! Even more excitingly I have been informed that children can be bought for £10 each so perhaps I can get a little home help back to England with me too!! (Only joking fellow housemates, no need to decorate the basement yet.)
I'm sure you will all be delighted that I have had to buy some horrendous clothing items for this trip – nerd sandals, strange shapeless trousers and explorer hats will be my daily attire, hence photos may be slightly more entertaining than the average snaps. It is important to remember that this is all FOR THE CHILDREN hence any mocking of my new wardrobe will actually be a direct insult towards them and may even accentuate the horrific nature of their little lives.
Will I survive it? Can I actually live without Starbucks or pig or cow meat? Will I like starving children? Will it matter that I hate spicy food? Will I end up becoming some weirdo charity worker, move to Calcutta for life, stop shaving / using deodorant and start speaking in tongues / convert to Christianity?
Watch this space to see...
