Day 1 - "Sightseeing" in Montevideo

2005-07-01, Montevideo, Uruguay

Yesterday was my last day at word and I said goodbye to all my colleagues. As nice as they were to me, I donīt think that I will miss working at the Chamber too much.

So today I had time to show Alex around (she arrived three days ago and had to amuse herself during most of that time). This first item on my list was the Uruguayan parliament, which I hadnīt seen either. It was built in 1908 and inaugurated in 1925 and is made of over 50 different tipes of marbles and European woods. Ths building is huge and moth impressive and musty-oppressive. I donīt think Iīd like to work in an environment like that, but the people there didnīt seem unhappy. The best thing was the library, which still has its original furniture and is open to the public.

We picked the first rainy day for our sightseeing - and Montevideo doesnīt get any nicer in grey mucky weather. We had planned to go to the top of the town hall (basically the highest building in Montevideo), but it didnīt really make anyy sense in that rain. And I was too lazy to walk down to the harbour (with the famous mercado del puerto), so we tried the lunch buffet at La Vegetariana. Well...food is generally somewhat bland in Uruguay (in terms of them not using too many spices), but as it is definitely a cattle country, vegetarian food is not one of their strengths. They have other good things (like dulce de lecke, for instance).

After a not very satisfying lunch we saw the Independance Square (and the outside of the Chamber), the Cathedral and had coffee at the Irazu - absolutely fantastic place. We stayed longer than we wanted, because the rain had gotten worse - should have been a warning fpor us for the things for come...

When we returned home, I packed all my things - realizing once more how much stuff I had for those 5 months. It was actually a rather emotional moment, saying goodbye to the room. The next time I see it, it will already belong to the next intern. Sniff.
