The reality of our journey is that our internet connection is becoming more and more problematic – both in cost and availability, so as our trip winds down, so does our enthusiasm to write a lot about what we’ve done. We’ll let the pictures tell the story and fill in family and friends face-to-face in the days and weeks to come. Suffice to say, we consider our visit to Checkpoint Charlie Museum to have been a highlight of our Berlin trip. We'll let the photo captions tell the story of today's activities.
[Posted July 20: The last photo in today's collection was taken in 1967 from a ledge or balcony across the street from the Checkpoint Charlie Museum, which is featured in today's journal. Another photo posted this date shows the ledge. The photo is an accurate image of the checkpoint as it actually existed during the tense days of the Cold War in Berlin. Three vehicles of special interest are seen -- a bus preparing to drive into East Berlin, a passenger car that has come from East Berlin and approached the checkpoint for clearance into the West (note a West Berlin policeman with rifle on the near side of Checkpoint Charlie next to the Jeep) and another passenger car in the distance that is about to clear the zig-zag barriers at the East German checkpoint. Also visible in this photo is the viewing platform visited by untold numbers of dignitaries and others over the years to look into the East. The Wall itself is difficult to see but is the low gray structure beyond the Allied Checkpoint sign. The film crew on the balcony may have been from a television station, shooting footage of the "denied area" of East Berlin. Today's Checkpoint Charlie museum is in the Foto-Zentrum building at right.]
