Hey, still in Berlin but off again tomorrow - more packing!
Since I last wrote... we went to the zoo and got our faces painted, that night went on a bar crawl (cool bar under a railway bridge full of communist kitsch; bar with odd pictures of women on the ceiling; submarine-stylee glam rock den; bohemian squat with surreal murals, graffiti and a fire-breathing bar. apparently it was in goodbye lenin, will have to re-watch that when i get home!; mudd club berlin; and finally after all that berlin-ness, a club playing r n b that could have been anywhere!)
yesterday we went on a walking tour, saw all the sights and heard some crazy stories. i don´t think there´s anywhere like Berlin, it´s fabulously unique. i veer between loving it and being in disbelief that in this fab place they have neo-nazis in the city council, and they have to stop people desecrating the holocaust memorial!
today i had an alice day, went to the pergamon museum, saw some amazing stuff - the pergamon altar from greece with this huuuuuge frieze, market gates from...somewhere... they´re huge but they cocked up the reconstruction so they´re falling apart, it´s awful.amazing babylonian gates, fascinating mini-museum of islamic art. i swear the audiotour was by richard madeley, it was really disconcerting!
then later i went to the reichstag, went up into the dome. so much cooler than it looked, glad i went there rather than the ugly (yet high) soviet tv tower.
live 8 tomorrow, im going to follow lorna to prague at 5ish, so i can see some of the concert. she´s not bothered about going to it, so shes going to prague first thing. she´s worrying me about arriving in prague at 10pm, but i´m not missing live 8 when i´m in the city that day!
off for some dinner now, more from prague (wish me luck speaking czech!)
