As noted earlier, we packed for cool weather, but the temperature has been between 85 and 90+ since we arrived. So instead of buying some cheese and wine with the euros in our pockets today, we shelled out for some clothes more suitable for the weather. That took the better part of the morning, leaving time in the afternoon for a visit to the Café Club Metropole.
Six years ago, an ex-pat named Ric Erickson began hosting a weekly get-together for Anglos at a café across the street from the Louvre. Each Thursday, from 3 to 5, anyone can become a life member of this “club” simply by signing the guest book. The only rule is that there are no rules. We dropped in today and found the opportunity to speak fluent English nonstop somewhat refreshing after a week in France.
Halfway through the session the weather turned on a dime. What had been a hot, relatively clear and humid day suddenly was a cooler, darker and windier late afternoon, with a downpour so severe that cars were stalled in underpasses and water rushed into Metro stations, according to a TV report.
We’re not sure what clothes to wear tomorrow.
