Lennie chalks up yet another good decision -- to leave the Alps for a stay in the urban environment of Lyon, where we are overnighting in the Villa Florentine, a former monastery that overlooks the old town portion of Lyon. It dates from the 1600s and – according to the in-room literature -- was a cooperative effort between Florence, Italy and Lyon to celebrate the marriage of Henry IV to Marie de Medici. Frescoe abound. After our rustic accommodations in Megéve, this four-and-one-half-star hotel is a joy.
It’s hot in France! Neither of us is good at making the conversion in our head, but if memory serves, 30 Celsius converts to something in the low 90s F. We packed for cool weather. Walking around the old town was done in shadows along cobblestone streets. The evening dinner on the terrace overlooking Lyon was our chance to enjoy Lyonnaise cooking, reputed to be the best in France. We agree.
Channel surfing early on the morning on the 20th brought an unexpected pleasure – the last five minutes of overtime in Game 5 between the Spurs and Detroit.
Our stroll through old town included a long visit with Georges Dos Santos, the “Flying Sommelier” proprietor of the Antic Wine shop. He has lived in St. Helena in Napa Valley and was more than helpful in plotting out today’s visit to a nearby (we hope) wine region. We’re going to drop his name and see what happens.
