Hello again,
Well our Sahara adveture is over and so itīs back to the city for us ... In order to get to Fes from the desert we had decided to join up with Matt and Rachel to get a Grand Taxi to make the 6 hour drive (rather than 8 plus hours on the bus) ... Basically a Grand Taxi is a 1980ish Mercedes that makes long trip between cities for a predetermined price (however that price may change at the whim of the driver) ... so we pile into the sweat box know as a taxi and take off for Fes ... Now a word to the wise - when in a taxi in Morocco it is probably not a great idea to stop at the drivers perferred location for lunch, particularly if this restaurant features huge slabs of meating hanging in the hot sun, being swarmed by thousands of flies ... so against our better judgment and we decided to try this "authentic" Moroccan dining experience ... the rest of the ride was quite uneventful exept for the car overheating 5 or so times and a brief stop at a garbage dump to check out some monkeys ...
We arrived in Fes at about 3 or 4 in the afternoon and all checked into a hotel which featured a bar (one of the few places you could get beer in the country) a pool and a twerpy front desk clerk ... chilled by the pool in the sun with some drinks ... at this point iīm starting to feel a little woozy, but figure its probably just being a bit tired combined with sitting by the sun and having a couple drinks ... so the group of us decide to head out in to the medina for dinner however, there are no restaurants in the medina...we ended up following some little kid to his "uncleīs, best resaurant"(ie. most expensive place in fes) ...through dinner the stomach starts to feel "interesting"... and iīm thinking that this canīt be good ... we finish up and make our way back through the gauntlet/maze of a medina to the hotel where it promptly becomes very clear that I do in fact have food poisoning (at this time I am seriously regretting my lunch time decision to order the meat)... so after a brutal night in which scott was very nice, brought me water and took overall very good care of me (particularly considering that i was in quite a disgusting condition) we spent our only full day in Fes in the hotel room watching CNN world news and napping(Scott did manage to get out for a bit to go for dinner with Matt and Rachel and up to some tombs with a cool view of the city) ...
The next day we took off early for Tangier, which is a suprisingly nice town. Weīd heard lots of bad things about it but managed to find a decent hotel for about 10 bucks each (same hotel William Borroughs stayed in while writing "Naked Lunch") and had a good dinner at a little pizza place (no more moroccan food for me) ... caught the ferry for our return to spain the next moring with exactly 0 dirham (dollars)left and said goodbye to Morocco.
