Wow, our overnight bus tour was by far the best thingw e have done so far anmd worth every pennt we spent on it!!! We started out by leaving Rome early Saturday morning. We headed down to Naples and did a little bus tour getting off only to take a panoramic picture...Naples is the dirrtiest city ever, glad we arent staying here...thanks for the advice Grandma...you were right!!!
We got off at a little factory that makes cameos out of seashells and hopped back on to head to Pompeii where we got off in the new city and had lunch...the lkunch was awesome (and free with our trip). Spaghetti, mashed potatoes and some kind of meat that we couldnt identify but kind of tasted like a cross between turkey and pork. In the restaurant we sat with a couple on their honeymoon that had obviously didnt get off the tour when they were supposed to and were having the worst time ever...just complained about having to do a 2 hour tour of Pompeii before going to Capri. Half way through our meal a little italian girl came in off the street and asked them for a coke...and they gave her one and she walked away...strange.
Anyway, after lunch we did a walking tour of Pompeii...wow. It is something i have always wanted to do and was an incrediable experience. They had plaster casts of bodies and the position they were found in. When they were digging down they found hollow areas in the ash where bodies had decayed...they filled them with paster and the paster formed the position of the body that had decayed there...really neat. The city has shops, houses, mosaics, drains, streets, theatres etc that were all covered by the ash. Walking thourgh the city kind of had an eerie feeling. It is only 75% dug up and is still being excavated to this day. The pictures dont do it justice...it was so neat.
After Pompeii, the two of us and another couple from Australia were the only ones moving onto Sorrento for the night so we hopped in a mini bus and our tour guide took us to our hotel. We werent expecting much but when we got there it was a four star hotel on the sea! BEAUTIFUL! Dinner was on the terrace and served in silver domes where the waiters revealed our dinner to us which was by far the best meal we have had yet! And again free with our tour. I had celery soup, pork pastry and coffee cream puff...so very very good. And all while looking at the ocean! Quite a change from hostels and baguettes...nice to have some real meat! Anyway, after dinner we walked aoround the city of Sorrento which is all on the ocean and surrounded by cliffs. Nicest place we have been so far.
In the morning we met the Australian couple again at 8:45 and a mini bus took us to the port where we hopped on a boat to Capri. Since there were only four of us we joined another tour group of little old ladies from all over the states! So many little old ladies! Morgan and I were by FAR the youngest there. LOL it was funny cause they were all fussing over us and asking us where we are freom and how often we call our mothers lol. Once on Capri (which is the most beautiful island of cliffs and blue water I have ever seen) we got on a mini bus with all the little ladies and their husbands and drove up the mountain to Anacapri, a small city at the top of the mountain. It reminded me of Niagara on the lake but so much nicer and more expensive. Movie stars have homes there. The road up to Anacapri was wrapped around the mountain so we had the most panoramic views! Once in Anacapri we had a walking tour. At the end there was a chair lift all the way up the mounatin to the lslands highest point! Morgan was nervous of the height but we did it! At the top there was a garden but it was an overcast day so you look down and all you see is clouds! We joked that it was like heaven...you couldnt even see 20 feet down the mountain...clouds and a garden...it was funny. and then we split off from the old ladies and had lunch (included again) with the Australian couple. They were so nice...and also travelling for three months. They went to Mexico and took a transatalntic cruise to Italy. After lunch we went back down the mountain to Capri (with our tour guide Roberta who was so funny and Italian). Once at the port we hopped on a little motor boat to the blue Grotto...a cave in the water with an opening only one meter high...we got off the motor boat into a little row boat and rowed into the cave which has electric blue water inside because of the way the sun hits the water through the caev opening!! WOW is all i can say...look at the pictures but they dont do it justice. They guy rowing the boat was singing Italian songs the whole time in the cave LOL. Once we went back to the port we got on the boat to Naples where we are now...waiting for the train that leaves at 11:00 for Bari where we go overnight and catch the boat to Greece tomorrow evening. Our two day tour was so much fun...
If you ever come to Italy, go to Sorrento and Capri...made me fall in love with Italy...
