Hello everybody,
we have just returned from Easter Island and I finally managed to get some pictures uploaded (juhu!!)...
Easter Island is one of the most remote corners of the globe. It is about five hours flight (or 3700km) from the Chilean mainland, and about 2500km away from the next inhabited island. The place is home to some 3000 people and most famous for its rich cultural heritage.
Between roughly 1000AD and 1600AD, the Rapa Nui people errected about 700 statues, the so called moai. Another 350 remained unfinished and are lying around the crater where they had been carved (see the picture I am on). The culture later declined for unknown reasons and most moais were teared down. Today, some have been re-erected and remain being extremely impressive.
