So I went to Oslo last weekend and then this weekend I had a long weekend from classes so my friend Sara and I went to London for the weekend. We had planned the trip about three weeks ago and I was really looking forward to it. London proved to be all that I imagined and a great city to spend time in. I would like to go back again and see some of the things that we didn’t have time for this past weekend. We left late on Friday night and didn’t arrive to our hotel until about 2 in the morning but the flight was so cheap that we didn’t mind. So on Saturday we slept in and had a relaxing breakfast at the hotel. On our first day we saw the famous sites of the city and toured around the older part of the city. We walked through Hyde Park, viewed Buckingham Palace and gardens, Big Ben and the Westminster Abbey. We also spent lots of time on King St. which is a high end shopping street and although neither of us could afford anything it was cool to see the latest fashions hitting the London streets. After walking all over the city, well over five miles, we went back to our humble hotel, took a break and freshened up and then headed out to Picadilly circus for dinner. This area has tons of restaurants and pubs and reminded me a lot of time square on a smaller level. It is also where the theatre district is so we got some info on shows for later in the weekend. We were exhausted by 11 or so, so we called it an early night and got a good night sleep.
On Sunday the weather was beautiful so we set out walking to Oxford Street which was an area we hadn’t explored yet. We did some more shopping, this time in an area where we could afford some things. After this we went to the science museum to see an IMAX show but it was sold out unfortunately so we just visited the museum for awhile instead. After this it was such a beautiful sunny day we spent the afternoon lying in the sun by Long Water of Hyde Park. On this night we went for dinner to the Hard Rock Café, now I have visited Stockholm, Athens and London Hard Rock.
Monday would be our last day in London so we had a busy day planned. First we checked out of our hotel and found luggage storage at Victoria Station and then set out to the London Aquarium. After the aquarium we took a bus to Tower Bridge and The Tower of London. Unfortunately by the time we got to the bridge it was raining which was a bummer at first but what’s a trip to London without a rainy day. The bridge was impressive and the castle was beautiful. We didn’t tour the inside but the outside was right out of a fairy tale and the towers looked like they should have a princess letting her long hair out the window. On our way back along the River Thames we stopped at the Tate Modern which is a huge modern art museum. We only had time for just one of the floors but it was most impressive. We had a quick dinner and then in the evening we saw a play at the Old Vic Playhouse. We saw The Philadelphia Story which starred Kevin Spacey. He did a wonderful job and it was really cool to see a movie star acting on stage in live theater.
After the show we headed back to the station, picked up our luggage, got a snack and headed to London Luton Airport where our flight was leaving at six in the morning. We spent the night in the airport waiting for our flight to save some money on hotels; students are always looking for a way to save a buck. I was extremely tired when I returned home this morning but also very satisfied. I really enjoyed London.
