Contrary to common beliefs held in Australia, not everyone in Africa lives in mud huts with grass roofs. I have included some photo’s of Lou and Julie’s home just for proof. Lou and Julie live in the north of Pretoria in a suburb called Chantelle (which is part of Akasia – kind of like how we have shire councils at home).
The area where they live is only newly being developed, and only 2 years ago the street that Lou and Julie live on, was the only one in the area to have houses. The rest of the area used to be farmland and veld (pronounced felt – which means bush or grass land). We often hear the jackals calling at night, but Julie said that the sounds of their calls are getting further away, as the more built up the area is becoming.
And just to still the curiosity of some people who have already asked me. Yes there is running water, flushing toilets and electricity. The house is red brick and no it does not have dirt floors (unless the dogs have come inside with muddy paws). In many ways the suburb of Chantelle is much like any other suburb in Australia that is just in it’s infancy.
