This was an experience that I was not able to capture any of on film because using a flash would have distressed the animals and also could have been dangerous.
On drive to the main lodge and back to our chalet we saw a large Kudu female (she was in our driveway) and a young black backed Jackal on the side of the track.
Our game ranger was only new to Mabula, and I believe that he did a splendid job of showing us what he could (the animals seemed to be hiding that night) and he was a fountain of information about the wildlife and the habitat, it was a pleasure being in his group.
Spotting game on a night drive is not a very easy task. Most of us were busy looking for animals, while Nelson (our ranger) was moving the spotlight back and forth, looking for a little red reflection that indicates the eyes of an animal. Nelson was busy driving, moving the flashlight, looking for game and telling us informative stories. Not many men can multi task like that (lol).
While we on the drive we saw impala, and other varieties antelope. We also saw some hares, bats and bushbabies, which are tiny little white, nocturnal monkeys that would easily fit into the palm of your hand, they are light in colour and have huge eyes and look a little like a cross between a possum and a monkey.
Another game drive vehicle saw an aardvark and announced it over the shortwave radio, but by the time we got to where they were, the aardvark had disappeared into the bushes and out of sight.
