Denmark is not a place to visit when on a tight budget!!! I caught a taxi from the airport to my hostel and paid 200Kr which is equivalent to about $40US. I also had my wallet stolen whilst walking through a suburb called Fredericksburg, although some might say I lost it as I had just been to the Carlsberg Beer Factory with their free samples. Given I was catching up with mum in less than a week I wasn’t too worried, I still had some travellers checks but had to walk back to the hostel that afternoon to get them.
Hmm, that intro sounds like I had a shite time. I didn’t, but I wasn’t really their long enough to achieve what I wanted. My family originally comes from Denmark so I wanted to see where they came from etc, but that never happened I didn’t have enough time to leave Copenhagen.
I found a booklet at the hostel which had a bunch of walks in it that took you to different parts of Copenhagen including all the main sites like the Little Mermaid. So that’s how I did things. The first walk took me through the Vesterbro area which happens to be the red-light district, past a house in which Lenin once lived and to the City Museum (which has a very good historical display of the city in it). The second tour was that on which I lost my wallet so we’ll skip over to the next day. Enjoyed the city almost to myself as it was a public holiday and I got into town rather early, headed out to the Little Mermaid and the Langeline (bit overrated if you ask me, all the statues here are a gangly green, they really need to clean them up). The highlight of today though was walking down Pusher Street in Christianhaven, having pizza served to me by a bloke smoking pot and just chilling out in this groovy little place.
The HI is very good if not a little too far out of the city, but if ya don’t mind bus rides I’d give it a go. Very scenic, rural little area. Calming place.
