| | | Black Water Rafting Subterranean Rivers | | | | | I have been up to a lot of adventure since I left Auckland.... My first stop was Waitomo village, which is famous for it’s numerous underground caves. I went on an exciting black-water rafting trip through the caves floating down a subterranean river that flows through pitch-black underground caves filled with glow-worms. It was kind of scary because for a large part of the trip they have you turn off your headlamps so you are just floating through the cold water gently bumping into the sides of the cave wondering what is around you... once you let go of your fears of the unknown it was really cool to lean back on the raft and gaze at the ceiling of the caves where the glow worms looked like a star covered sky. At times, I felt like I could even see familiar constellations or the Milky Way. The walk to the caves was through a wonderful rain forest filled with really cool tree ferns the size of palm trees. I stayed in a very old hotel that is supposedly haunted called “Waitomo Caves Hotel” built in 1908. The historical hotel is situated on a hill overlooking the Waitomo Village and the famous Waitomo Caves. I wandered down the hill and met some friendly locals at a bar in town that felt like a ski lodge in Colorado. This was definitely an interesting part of the trip and another NZ adrenaline adventure experienced.
