It's probably a good thing I'm travelling alone. I finished my volunteer work yesterday and didn't decide what to do next until today. Other's might find this kind of last minute decision making aggravating, but its the only way for me to travel. I had quite a few ideas running around in my head about where to go and what to do, but didn't decide to settle on something until today. Before I wrote that I would be going to the Annapurna region to do some trekking, but after some deliberating with myself I've decided to travel north of Kathmandu into the Langtang valley for a few weeks.

From what I've read and heard, not nearly as many people trek in the Langtang Valley as Annapurna or Everest region. A lack of fellow tourists is definitely a plus in my book.

Leaving the school yesterday wasn't easy to do. I had such a great time there and made fantastic new friends. A few people came to see me off early in the morning which was nice, but to be honest not wanted. Whenever I leave somewhere I would prefer just dissapearing one day. I would of course leave a nice note in such a case.

Right now I'm staying in Thamel, the tourist district of Kathmandu. Definitely not my favorite place but very convenient for shopping. I haven't bought much, just a few last minute things for the trek. Large sombrero, two big beach balls, a tennis racket, etc. You know, the essentials.

My plan is to leave from my hostel early tomorrow morning and walk to Boudhanath which is just NE of Kathmandu. It should only take about 2 hours. I'll probably stay the night there. This first day is going to resemble the rest of my trek I think. I'm definitely in no hurry, so a trek that could take about 2 weeks might take me 3 or more. I just plan on taking it slow and enjoying every bit of every step I take.

That's about all I have to say for this journal entry. I just wanted to say something before I left because I won't have any access to internet when I'm trekking. (And even if there is access, there's no way I'm going to check my email while trekking in the Himalaya) And also, please don't expect a very detailed description of my trekking venture. I'm only going to write during the trek if I really feel like it. Anyways, there are plenty of trekking stories and descriptions out there about the same places I'm going that have been written by much better writers. Read those if you want to get some idea of what I'm doing.

Thanks for reading.

Next entry: A taste of the Nepal Himalaya.
