Japan Day

2005-04-11, Tokyo, Japan

Hello everybody

Well here we are at last, after all the organization and waiting we are now in Japan. This is the end of our first day, which was pretty easy as all we had to do was sit on a plane for eight hours, get on a bus, move into our hotel rooms, and finally go for dinner.

The flight was fine, lots of films, and every body getting to know each other. A couple of the boys seemed a bit quiet, probably due to getting through six hundred levels on their game boys, but it kept them busy and out of trouble. The staff had a good chat subjects ranging from their previous journeys in Japan to the amazing dental gadgets that you can now by in Woolworth's…fascinating!

The guys worked really well getting on and off of the plane, keeping together in the Airports. The fours girls became TEAM GIRL and looked after each other, two of them have just laid eggs that have just hatched…….tamagoichi electronic pets that is. Seems like this is the female equivalent to game boys.

Then we were less than ten minutes away, I started the game: first person to spot Japan gets a prize…although when asked I had to reveal there wasn’t a prize. It kept them busy, and speaking for myself I got very excited, as this is my first time visiting Japan. The fact that the noise level from our group also went up probably showed that others shared the feeling. The difficulty with the game was the extremely grey clouds that fully covered the land. They had announced temperatures of 7 degrees and rain on the ground, and being in the sky you could see where it came from. Eventually Megan shouted that you could see the ground, later Helen disputed that she had seen through the gap in the cloud first……. Whatever, we had cloud cover almost right the way down to the ground and when we did get below it, it was seven degrees and raining…reminded me of the UK dark, grey, cold and wet…..Boo!

With rain coats and umbrellas we jumped on the bus and started our hours trip into Tokyo, Couldn't see a lot as it was dark but the freeway did pass over some impressive waterways and once into the centre you got the sense of a built up cityscapes.

At the hotel we checked in and then just went down the road to a local restaurant which was great and all the guys showed an extremely open attitude to trying the authentic Japanese food which really impressed the staff and children alike…

We were informed that the restaurant was famous for its eel. Sophie and Meghan were expecting the eel to be disgusting, or like squid, but like the rest of us, they found it to be utterly delicious! Helen loved the fact that we sat on the floor and put our feet under ground. The floor was heated to keep our feet warm, as we had to take our shoes off to enter our private room. The restaurant was a-buzz with the noisy chef and local Japanese people. They all seemed to be mesmerised by the cute Auzzie kids. Meghan practiced her Japanese with the chef who understood every word. Brook was impressed with how polite the chef and people of Japan were already!

We all went to bed quickly and easily looking forward to the day ahead.
