Yes, we have our own little Grand Canyon in Armenia! It's about a 2 hour drive south of Yerevan, on the route to Tehran and Karabakh.
The scenery is amazing...you're driving through snow covered mountains and then all of a sudden you get off the main road and drive about 3-4 kilometers and you find yourself inside a canyon surrounded with red sandstone cliffs and mountains. The sky is blue and then you climbed up to the top and find a beautiful small church built. IT appears out of nowhere. The church, called Noravank - New Monestary - is a pilgrimage sight where people come from all over. When we arrived it was late afternoon and there was an old 1960s white limo parked up front with two gold coled rings made out of cardboard. Outside you can hear the priest blessing the newlywed couple and as i entered the church through the side door..i then climbed up the few steep steps and crashed the small wedding...i couldn't help myself. Afterwards the I asked the priest if i could photograph him outside and he asked me for a copy of my photos. I promised to come back and give him copies. He was newly appointed as the priest of the church - his first post. I can't go back on my word to a priest, now can I. I am destined to return to the most beautiful church in Armenia!
