Adventures at the Taronga Zoo

2005-02-23, Sydney, Australia

Today we decided to go to Taronga Zoo, Sydney’s zoo located across the harbour very close to the city center. We took the bus to Circular Quay (pronounced key) where all the ferries depart and arrive. It is close to the Sydney Opera House and the Harbour Bridge. We took the ferry across and got to see all sides of the opera house. It is actually a light shade of brown rather than white (like it looks like in all the pictures).

We took an incline thing up to the zoo entrance (it is on a hill) and ran right into the koala walk about. You could get your picture taken really close to them for $10 but I decided against it and just shot some pictures of my own. Next, I got to see huge pelicans, all different colored birds and sleeping wombats.

We went into the kangaroo and wallaby area where you could get as close as you wanted to them. The wallabies were bouncing around everywhere while the kangaroos just spread out on the ground. After that we saw echidnas, platypuses, bats and night creatures, more koalas, a dingo, and a Tasmanian devil (he kept running in circles around the glassed area).

There was a cute seal show with a smaller baby seal and a big male seal. They performed tricks and did jokes with the girl that worked there.

After the show, we saw monkeys, penguins, elephants, giraffes (I got some good pictures for you, Janice!), goats, pygmy hippos, bears, lions, tigers, snow leopard, meerkats, flamingoes, and more that I can’t remember.

We ate lunch at the zoo and then headed for the last area: reptiles. It was exciting to see the huge Komodo dragon, crocs, Gila monsters, lizards, and frogs. I could have done without the snakes though.

Before we left, we made it to a koala show where a guy talked about koalas while a couple of them hung out in the trees. Maggie and I had some fun in the gift shop before we left to take the ferry back to Circular Quay.

When we got to Circular Quay, there is a guy that sits in a chair wearing a silver outfit. He looks like a statue and he’ll take a picture with you if you put money in his hat. If you take a picture and don’t leave money (thinking that it is just a statue), he’ll follow you and scare you. I thought it was pretty amusing. How do people come up with these things?
