China. You have to love it. Pick and mix restaurants are everywhere, you just point at what you want and then they stir fry it all up, so you have baskets of fresh vegetables, some sausages, kebabs etc. Big plastic tubs with fish swimming around, some eels - and best of all : a nice big cage with puppies in it! Yum, the Andrex pup gets his come-uppance at last.
Can't be sure as to whether I have or haven't eaten any canine as yet, but the rat kebabs were tasty, although not a whole lot of meat, maybe they were gerbils.
I saw those Terracotta warrior chaps when I was up at Xi'an, but I wasn't amazingly impressed actually, despite having been informed beforehand that they were the "8th Wonder of the World" they didn't do all that much for me, but they did look pretty lifelike I s'pose. I still resent having to pay more than 20pence to see anything or eat anything out here.
I think i've been travelling too long, things just don't surprise me anymore. Least of all the things involving chickens. You'll be sitting on the train, happily slurping noodles when the guy next to you pulls a whole cooked chicken out of his bag, rips it in half and him and his wife just tuck straight in. not a blink. And you'd be amazed at just how many chickens one guy can carry on the back of a motorbike. In fact, almost everyone seems to be transporting a chicken somewhere. And they're always staring at me (the chickens), as they hang upside down by the legs while the holder is busy hoiking up as much phlegm as they can muster and apparently not giving much precedence to the Asian custom of not raising one's voice so as to avoid losing face. Every bus you take, there's always someone with a chicken. Or a bag of hedgehogs. To be sold on a footbridge, as though everyone crossing the road is going to have an impulse to buy a hedgehog. "Look ma, I know you sent me out for washing powder, but these things are great" At least magic beans grow into something useful.
