Kathmandu by Bicycle.

2005-02-14, Kathmandu, Nepal

I've rented a bicycle and pay a man 1000 Nepali Rupees per month for its use. That's about US$14.00. The bike leaves a bit to be desired, but the cost can't be beat. Her name is Hercules. At least that is what's printed on her frame along with the advertisement of her dual suspension which is non-existent. There are spiralled rubber coverings on parts of her frame giving the illusion of a suspension system, but under the coverings the frame is completely solid. That along with her rock hard, hemorroid inducing seat makes for a pretty rough ride through town. Add shotty breaks, a faulty gear system, and a gross weight around 50 pounds, and cruising around Kathmandu becomes very unforgettable. Despite her flaws, I'm starting to love her.

Or maybe it's the streets I love. I was very hesitant at first to fling myself into the madness of Kathmandu traffic. It took me 5 days to build up the courage and tempt fate. I was hooked after the first ride. From the outside, the streets appear to be a complete mess, but once your in, things appear much different. A smooth flowing, semi-considerate river of vehicles. As long as you keep up a good combination of defensive and offensive riding, it's a great way to get around.

Next entry: A day at the market...
