It felt nice to be up early and get into my morning routine before class. I especially needed the time to prepare for class since Russian is getting very difficult! I don’t have a knack for this stuff, and it is a crash course, so we learn a truckload of material each day. I can’t even get past the alphabet for goodness sakes! I just don’t get it…we have to know how to read and write in both print and cursive. The problem is, the block letters look nothing like the cursive ones, and neither of these sets of letters look like the English alphabet!
I survived class, but the weather outside was looking rough. We were going to go to Red Square, so I bundled up in layers and off we went to the Metro. After a long ride the whole way down the grey line, and then stitching trains, we arrived. Red Square is absolutely amazing...the Kremlin, St. Basil’s, the Central Mall, Lenin’s Tomb…some of the stuff has been around before the United States even, and this place is loaded with history. Just being there was surreal, and I cannot wait to go back for many more visits. We took tons of pictures, saw the sights (despite the weather), and even stood in the center of Moscow...they call it Zero Kilometer. The Muscovites say that if you throw a coin while standing there and make a wish, it will be granted. It sounds like a cool idea, until you see that after you throw your coin, there are old beggar ladies around, waiting to pick them up. We then headed back home for the night. It is Halsey’s Birthday, so we celebrated with some cake in the classroom with a few Russian friends. Finally, we topped off our first Friday night in Moscow with a homemade All-American Ranch-Marinara pasta dinner stewed up by yours-truly, Jen, and hats-off to Halsey and the fabulous ranch dressing!
