Happy late New Year! I spent New Year´s in the village this time around. It is the custom in Ecuador to build huge paper mache effigies and then burn them. So that´s what they did. They put the effigies of different political figures, as well as local villagers, on display during the day time, and then at 12 midnight they burned them in the village plaza.
Then they had the village dance. It was kind of anti-climatic since they always have dances here. In fact, over the next four weeks, about 8 dances are already planned. I mean, how much Cumbia can you dance to??
I recently realized that Ecuadorians can sleep through anything. And I mean anything! If you dropped a bomb in the middle of Quito at 2 A.M., the Ecuadorians would just continue snoring away. How do I know this? Cuz recently when I traveled on a night bus to the city of Guayaquil, the bus driver put on the movie Liar Liar at earsplitting volume. I looked around me and all the other passengers slept right through the movie, jaws open, saliva dripping out, noses snoring contentedly.
And in my own village, the guy across the road turns up Cumbia music full blast at 5 AM every damn day. It is so loud it makes my windows vibrate. But of course, none of the neighbors complain cuz they are just snoring away.........
I´ve been to dances at people´s houses, the DJ blasting away the music so loud it makes the cows moo. But there will always be several people curled up on the floor in some corner of the house at 2 AM dreaming to their hearts content even though the volume of the music can be felt as far away as Colombia.
