2004-12-20, Ban Hatkai, Laos

The national park is home to elephants, tigers and many other wild animals. We came to survey 2 villages, in 1 they are building a watch tower to see elephants in the wild. The only problem is that at night the elephants come to see what the humans are doing and knock some stuff around. Ban Hatkai is where i will be working. We had a meeting with the village chief and the other men to ask them for permission for me to live there. Our goal is to create eco-tourism treks for the villages to be self-sufficient, to have some other income other then from the rice fields.

To enter the national park, we stopped at the park ranger's office. The park is controlled by the military, and the head officer speaks some english (a good contact to have).

On our drive back to the capital we hit rush hour traffic. That's when school gets out and there are hundreds of children on bycicles cycling home from school...no cars or buses...just hundreds of bycicles on Rt 13.
