10 Things I learned in Koh Phayam

2004-12-09, Ko Phayam, Thailand

1. If a frog decides to make your bathroom his home, you have no choice but to welcome your new bathroom-mate.
2. When a huge jelly fish ( 5 times as big as my head ---i'll email you pictures) gets swept in from the ocean, there's nothing you can do to save it. Because trying to get it back into the ocean can mean severe acid burns all over your body (don't worry it didn't happen).
3. When the PORN BAKERY (no one has the heart to tell them what Porn means in English), the only bakery on the island makes its daily batch of bread, you must be one of the first ones there. The daily production of 2 dozen pieces of bread is sold on a first come first serve basis...so if you're late you better wake up early the next morning. It's kind of like rationing back during WW2 times i guess.
4. When lying on the beach reading don't be annoyed by the little Burmese kids who come to stare at you. It's just that they're not used to seeing WHITE people in bathing suits (Thai & Burmese people don't wear bathing suits...i think they all avoid the sun like the plague!)
5. When walking in the jungle, carry a stick with you and tap it on the ground as you walk to scare off snakes and other reptiles that may be around.
6. When swimming to the private island that's owned by some rich Thai man, make sure you know how to swim well because it can be rough when it's high tide.
7. Doing nothing all day in NO way gets boring. The mind learns to be still.
8. When writting stories about the eccentric people and the island, don't tell anyone because then they'll start acting NORMAL.
9. If you've never been on a motorcycle before, hold on tight because as much as you tell them..."slow, slow"...they'll still go fast.
10. I leave you with some Thai i've learned
sabadi kha - hello
kap khun kha - thank you
poooo lek lek - baby crab
