Top Ten Things I've Learned From Living in Italy

2004-12-12, Florence, Italy

I thought, since this is our last week here (sadness), I would update our site with a list of things we've learned since we've been in italy. So here it goes, in no particular order:

1. Vespas have the right of way, and they can do *whatever* they want. That includes going the wrong way down one way streets, driving on sidewalks, and hitting annoying tourists.

2. Your dog must be wearing a sweater at all times, and must be allowed to poop where it pleases.

3. Italians will pretty much go to the bathroom anywhere they feel like it. Anywhere.

4. Everything you want to see in Europe is being restored.

5. Just speak English, because Europeans most likely will accomodate your uneducated monolingual American butt.

6. If you like Bush, never come to Europe (or the rest of the world, for that matter).

7. If you want to eat out, expect the meal to take at least 2 and a half hours.

8. DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING. If you want it, ask for it. You may not inspect, smell, or do anything to anything you want to buy at a store. This includes food and hygiene products. If it smells bad once you buy it, too bad.

9. Unless the train is Eurostar, it will be late, especially in Italy.

10. Banks in Italy are from Satan.

I think that covers it. Yesterday we went to Arezzo, the city where Vasari was born and the city that was in most of "Life is Beautiful", so that was fun. We saw random guys wearing tights and waving flags, and we heard the Ghostbusters song on the radio. What a small and interesting world.

This week we have our finals, and after Friday we're done! We're starting to get really sad that we have to leave, because we're going to miss Florence alot. But we do miss everyone, so that makes it a little better. On Saturday we're going to Milan to see Da Vinci's "Last Supper," and then we're flying from there to Paris. We'll be in Paris for two whole days, and then we fly to London, and hop an Air India flight back to Chicago.

It's been an amazing 4 months!
