So I just finished up working as a glorified housewife at a sustainable living center in the mountains of Costa Rica and am now reaping my just rewards: a little tanning time in a national park filled with leaf cutter ants and howler monkeys that like to throw things. They hit my friend casey dead on in the forehead with a bit of refuse today, she says it’s the first time she has experienced whiplash via monkey.
My job was basically putting together nutritionally balanced yet inexpensive and tasty vegetarian meals in a town that only get veggies 1x a week. More planning involved than one might imagine. Needless to say, im loveing the fact that I can simply refuse to cook whenever I want!! Which just happens to be… 3x a day. My job is done, which I am half sad half happy about. Happy because I don’t have to worry about the price of tomatoes and running a kitchen, sad because it means that this huge part of my life is sort of coming to a close. Asi es la vida. I think its time to come home and get my ass graduated.
Yeah, I had the weirdest thanksgiving ever. It was hijaked by a bunch of boys who like to fry EVERYTHING. Dinner consisted of roasted squash that tasted like perfume, undercooked sweet potatoes, fried dumplings, fried pineapple, and fried something else that I never quite figured out what it was.
The “womenfolk” made the pies…. My dad brought down the pumpkin filling all the way from st. louis missouri. Needless to say the majority of the nutritive value of my dinner was composed of pie. Like 4 pieces of it. I rationalize that we made the pies, slaved for hours (ok I slaved for minutes and then we sat around for hours waiting for them to solidify) so its alright to hide half of them in the bedroom and sneak in to eat half before putting them on the table. Not as bad as it sounds…. In addition, “thanksgiving” was moved to Saturday. Not sure why…..
Anyways happy fiestas de quito…. This whole week celebrates the founding of Quito and I am celebrating even though no one else knows what the heck I am so excited about. So now you are in on it, feel free to party all week!!
I’m on the beach, feeling rather oily because I am 100% covered in a mix of 15- 45spf all over. Serveral times. I’m in Cahuita, this little town on the caribe side. We are in the minority: it seems the most unfriendly german tourists in the world all prefer Cahuita above all else. Pretty bizaare dynamic. It does come in handy though when people walk up and want to practice a little ingles and we can respond in (mostly) perfect spanish that we are…. GERMAN!!
Hope you are all doing well and getting excited for christmas. Or hannukah (I really don’t know how to spell that) or something else like winter goodness and cookies. Either way it seems weird to be seeing fake lpine trees everywhere and plastic santas singing in those weird electronic voices and sporting their identical fake fur lined uniforms when its, um, 85-90 F out.
Better go, my friend is going into convulsions over the idea of worms and the other is tormenting her…. Ehem, a strange day indeed. Love, emilita
