So here I am in the Land Down Under!
I arrived here the day before yesterday after a couple of flights from Christchurch (changed planes in Sydney).
And guess what? It's hot! Very hot! Sort of a blazing sunshine, not a cloud in the sky hot. By the way, how IS the weather back in dear old Blighty???
Cairns is pretty touristical (as an Austrian guy said to me tonight). They've just spent millions creating an artificial, beachfront lagoon for swimming, which is just as well, as the beach here is, well, there isn't one. And even if there was, at this time of the year, you'd have to wear a suit of armour to swim in the sea to protect you from the deadly Box Jellyfish that come ashore.
My main reason for coming here was to go snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef. I was recommended a tour that not only provided snorkelling but also the chance to do an introductory scuba-dive.
What can I say? I enjoyed the dive so much, I paid for a second one. The diving in itself would've been a highlight, but the fact that it was on the Great Barrier Reef made it probably one of the best days since leaving home. It was awesome (there's that word again). You've all see the films, the photos, the documentaries, read the books etc. That's what it was like. I'll say no more.
Today I've worked on my tan as there's a pool at the hostel! Oh it's a hard life this, travelling!
