Fraser Island Down

If you have never been to Fraser Island then put it on your travel to do list. It is a world heritage listed sand island.

There are several ways to get to Fraser and after some research we choose to travel via Rainbow Beach.

We had a couple of days at Rainbow Beach and a swim in the surf…!!!!. (Yes the surf, you don’t realize how much you miss the waves and the sound of the surf.) We then put our caravan in storage and caught the barge from Inskip Point to Fraser Island. For those intrepid campers Inskip Point is part of the National Park and has many and varied camping spots and they are very inexpensive.

The Fraser Island barge lands you right on the sand and for those 4WD sand enthusiasts it is a mecca. There is beach driving in abundance, miles and miles of it and every track is well you guessed it….sand.

Our first stop was Central Station an unlikely name for the lslands most remarkable forest area. Though the island was heavily logged in the past large satinays, brush box and Kauri pines still stand. They are massive and impressive.

We camped in this tranquil setting for two days. We went on early morning walks to the Basin Lake and to Pile Valley We also went to Lake MacKenzie for a day. Lake Mackenzie is a perched lake, that occurs above the water table, a saucer-shaped depressions. The sand is powder white and the water as blue as blue can be.

Then we went up the beach highway to Dundaburra for two nights and walked the great sandblow walk. It was quite a challenge. Then on up to Indian Head and what a thrill….whale watching. We saw them frolicking in the ocean. Indian head is the perfect natural lookout. Then on to camp at Waddy Point . You have the choice now you can camp in a large fenced off camping areas or on the open beach.

We swam in the champagne pools and whale watched every day and we were always rewarded with a show from those magnificent creatures from the deep.

Back to Noosa for six days, where we were joined by Terry sister Gail and caught up with Maureen and Michael Dignam. We had a very pleasant dinner out at the Noosa Sailing Club where we won the seafood raffle so we all had a big extravagant lunch together the next day. It was great to catch up with everyone.

Then we went to visit friends in Gatton, Steve and Florintina. Gatton is the fresh food capital of Australia and we also did a scenic tour of Twoomba. We ;had two great days with our friends.

Then one night at Tallubudgeria where we had to order new number plates at Tweed Heads as the Cape claimed our front one. Never once did Queensland Police pull us up and question us. One night we were pulled over and Terry had to blow in the bag and lost his teeth, after much laughing between Terry and the police we were on our merry way no questions asked.

Now we are at Ballina house sitting for a week and then back to Tallubudgeria for a week, then slowly on our way home.
