A bit like Venice .... but with Oil Tankers

2001-10-25, Ernakulam, India

Ernakulam is a bunch of largish islands. To get around we took a huge bus like boat passing one of India’s biggest ports containing towering oil tankers and cruise ships. At Fort Cochin there is a mish mash of Dutch, British and Portuguese buildings which we wondered around for a while. They also have large Chinese finishing nets which dangle over the water and are plunged in to catch the fish. Chated to the fisherman and had a look at their catch. If you want to can pick a fish and take it to the restaurant across the road where they’ll cook it for you.

Got touted into going into a shop by some rickshaw drivers ... if they get so many tourists into the shop they get a t-shirt while we got a free ride back to the boat launch ... admittedly there were 4 of us stuffed into the rickshaw.

Met up with some of the English and Spanish people that we’d met on the way and went to a posh hotel for dinner. Very clean ... smart waiters ... they pull your seat out for you ... open the menu for you .... and then it’s full on, turn to number 11 on the volume, live rock from the resident band, playing Metalicca, Judas Priest, Deep Purple etc. Hold on to your plates so they don’t rattle off the table.
