When the bus stops at Siem Reap there is a horde of tuk tuk drivers and motorbikes asking only 500riel for a ride to town. It is so cheap because they want you to book them for the days you are going to the temple. We had a guy who spoke really good English and was pretty good. I would recommend getting a tuk tuk, its half the price of a car and its better than motorbikes as you get some sort of shelter when it rains or if it’s sunny. It’s about US$10 a day, which is pretty ok.
The ticket prices are pretty expensive but you just have to pay it to get to all the sites in Angkor. We got a 3 day pass for US$40 each, you need to have a passport photo as well, otherwise you can line up with the loads of people trying to get a picture at the gate. We’re here in low season and its busy, can’t imagine what it’s like in peak!
The first day we visited Angkor Thom and Angkor Wat with sunset at Phnom Bakheng. This is probably the most visited trail, if you were in Angkor for one day that would be what you would be seeing.
The next few days is filled with more temples and ruins. The whole area is absolutely amazing and you can imagine how many people it must’ve taken to build all the temples. There are still land mines in the area, so if you go to the temples make sure you stay on the normal paths! Now that’s a bit scary!
The temples were all built either as Hindu or Buddist, you can notice if it was built by a king or a nobleman. The kings always built theirs with the 4 faces and in the front of the gate there will be men carrying the serpent. One side were gods and the other demons. They are extracting the juices to make the elixir of immortality. The stories are pretty interesting if you’re bothered to read it or fork out the US$20 each day for a tour guide. We went cheapo and read the lonely planet!! The pictures don’t do the temples justice. You just have to be there to view it firsthand.
Well this is the end of our trip around South East Asia, would be a little while before we save up a little more money for our Europe leg! To all my friends, email me and keep me up to date with what’s going on at home. Miss you all!!
