We found a tour that took us through the Mekong Delta for 3 days, 2 nights and finish up in Phnom Penh in Cambodia. The tour cost us US$40 which is real cheap compared to flying into Phnom Penh. The tour was very leisurely, and gives you a good insight into the life of the people living in the Mekong Delta. We visited Mytho and the markets there…very dirty, crossed the ferry barge to Cantho and stayed the night there. Then we ventured off to Chau Doc the border between Vietnam and Cambodia, there we visited some of the countryside and met some of the local children there. It’s a fantastic trip to take to cross over to Cambodia.
In the morning of the 3rd day, we visited a fish farm and a Muslim minority village before heading for the border crossing by speed boat. One of the guys in our group gave one of the kids in the village a pen causing quite a stir, they kept swarming around all of us asking for a pen! It was so funny! I think they regretted giving the pen to the kid! Though the people there are so poor, you just want to give everything to them.
The border crossing is so funny, they made us take our bags into the office to get it scanned just in case we were smuggling something like ciggies or something like that into Cambodia, but the guys didn’t really know how to use the scanner and couldn’t figure out which way to let the belt run. Hehehe took them quite a while to figure it out and then they just looked for one second, laughed and waved us off! What the…????
The Cambodian immigration side was not as high tech, they didn’t have a scanner but maybe 10 guards sitting around chatting. They had the regular “Where you from?” questions, but they’re pretty friendly, not like the immigration people you meet at the airports!
Then we were off again speeding off to Phnom Penh at 40kms an hour! WoohooOO! Faster than the cars in Vietnam!!!!
