We arrived in Aitutaki late that sunday night and just checked into Paradise Cove, a little place on the beach with rooms in a house, also have bungalows. We just took a room in the house cause it was cheaper.
We woke up the next morning and rented some bikes and rode to town to get some groceries, what a mistake, 9:00 in the morning and it was scorching hot, no wind but we made it. Just hung out on our beach that day and explored the area, it was alright, not as nice as bora bora, but nice.
The next day we rented a scooter and explored the island, pretty cool place, lots of dirt roads going all over the place. We rode the hog up the mountain to the view point, they say Aitutaki has the best lagoon in the south pacific and from tha t view point it looks like it does. Riding down the mountain, or big hill, hit some loose dirt and down went the scooter, scooter was alright, iwas alright, clara not so lucky, nothing serious just some scrapes on the knee and foot. Looked painful but we got her bandaged up and continued on. We found a really nice beach and hung out there for the afternoon, went swimming and walked out in the lagoon.
For dinner that night we went to an island night where they have a buffet dinner and a tradional dancing show which was sooo cool. The music and dancing were awesome. After their show they pull up people from the audience and make them shake there stuff, and guess who got pulled up, that's right, me, and it's not like you can say no, so i got up there and showed them how it's done. Good thing the camera ran out of batteries so no pics, too bad.
The next day we book a lagoon tour, the boat left at 830 and returned at 400. We went out in the Lagoon and went cruising around to some of the small islands, ending up at Honeymoon Island where we went snorkeling and had lunch. The snorkeling was just alright not too many fish but saw some giant clams. Aitutaki would come a close second behind Bora Bora as one of the nices place we've seen.
Went back to Rarotonga the next day and did nothing, stayed at some place that was being renovated, they didn't say anything about it when we called and booked so we stayed one night and left the next day. We stayed at Rarotonga backpackers which is a nice place up on the hill, fairly new and had a swimming pool, lots of people staying here. For the next 4 days took open water diving course, lot of reading, lots of time in the pool the first 2 days and then ocean diving on days 3 and 4.
The first ocean dive was something, nervous going down, ears hurt a bit and hard to equalize the pressure but did it. Second dive wasn't bad but ears hurt and felt plugged up afterwards. The next day went for 2 more ocean dives, felt a lot better that day, went down to 18 meters the first dive and did a wreck dive the second dive -pretty cool but didn't stay down too long cause my air was running low. Ears were plugged after wards for a few days -actully still plugged now. finnished diving in the early afternoon and rented a scooter to cruise the island.
We really liked the Cook islands -lots to do, not too expensive and people say it's like hawaii before it got developed.
