If we need too much attention
Not content with being cool
We must throw ourselves wide open
And start acting like a fool
If we need too much approval
Then the cuts can seem too cruel

Friends, the situation is growing more dire with each passing day. My resources are stretched to the limit.

I barely have enough money to buy food, let alone other extras such as garter belts, q-tips, and Preparation H.

My clothes are all worn out and new shoes are just too expensive in the Amazon. Food is scarce due to the economic crisis and I havenīt seen cheddar cheese since I left the States.

In order to save what little money I have, Iīve taken to dressing like the natives -- a loin cloth. Gone are the days of shopping at the local store. I now hunt for my food like a true Amazonian. A local Shuar indian fashioned me a spear, and every other day we hunt wild game, such as Guatusa, Llamala, Danta and Armadillo. I also use a special blow gun to hunt monkeys hiding in the trees. In the morning, we throw some barbasco (a poisonous plant) into the river and harvest fish.

In order not to have to buy gas for my stove, I now cook all my food over an open flame. Of course I have to gather firewood every day, but who said being in the Peace Corps was easy?

And although I now grow native foods such as bananas, coconuts and yucca, I really miss some good olī fare from the States, Europe or anywhere that is not Ecuador.

So are you feeling generous yet? Have you not already sent me something? Whether you are a friend, relative or casual reader and would like to make a small contribution to fortifying Supernova, I would appreciate any of the following items:

1) Cereal: Wheaties, Cheerios, Total or Granola.
2) Old fashioned peanut butter with no sugar (the kind that has the layer of oil at the top).
3) Jar of nuts.
4) Protein bars.
5) Honey.

Also, any used magazines would be great, including Rolling Stone, GQ, Details, Maxim, Stuff, Playboy, Penthouse, Muscle & Fitness (or any other fitness mag), Mad Magazine, Mother Jones, Ms., Sci American, Discover.

Please send your contribution to:

Every time you sink your mouth into that juicy, succulent, delicious piece of pizza, please think of all the starving Peace Corps volunteers who are fantasizing about good food.
