Not so good news

Helmut’s grandfather died last night. He died peacefully. Earlier in the day he had troble breathing and the paramedics took him to the hospital. There the Doctor said that his lungs were filled with fluid and that they would give him medicine, but they were not sure if it would work because his heart is weak. He was 95 years old. Helmut went to the hospital last night, and was there when he passed. Grandpa took a few exasperated breaths and then he was gone.

Helmut had expected that he would die sometime this year and over the past month he had become worse. It still came as a shock and he is dealing with it as best as he can. Death is difficult. Everyone handles it differently. Yes, Grandpa was old, but this was a man who has always been in Helmut’s life. Either they lived next door to him or recently when the retirement home was not giving him adequate care, they took him in, fed him, bathed him Even when he was in the retirement home Helmut and his mom would pick him up every day for lunch or dinner. They were always with him. So now they will miss him.

Me, well I am not good with death. I feel like they need to be alone. I will just not get in their hair and help with what I can for the funeral. I am in that state of helplessness that one goes through when someone they love is hurt. I just must give Helmut time to heal.

In other news, I was walking to the apartment from the bakery this morning. I crossed the street and dropped the donut (that was in the bag) on the ground..(I was craving something American this morning. The donut was not as sweet as an American one, but the white icing was YUM!) Oh, so I drop the donut, and here comes a car, and I was pretty sure that the car was going to stop, but I just had to pick up the donut. The man did stop and went on and on in German, probably about what an idiot I was. I could have got run over for a donut. How dumb is that?? Next time, the donut can get run over. It is just not worth the risk.
