Number 1 (7th July - 15th July)
Both still well and no malaria as of yet. Grateful lift to ferry by R-D parents was followed by sooze due to lack of sleep packing. Arrived in (A) and more coffee induced snooze followed. Did you know that all the coffee in the South American plantations was originally shipped from here? A couple of says later
the ICE 127 (with Captain Kirk driving) took us to our next destination (B). This place should have been called Colonic, but the smell of the water helped. Campers and boules everywhere. Campers should be warned of the outrageous walk required to the campsite, but it
also must be noted that the baggage storage in the train station was space age - the next wonder of the
modern world. Put your ticket in anywhere and your bags miraculously appear, except of course if you've
scrunched up the ticket in your pocket and the whole station has to come to a standstill to find them.
Town (C) saw more bratwurst and saurkraut. Train pased down a rather famous river valley, and town (c) was found at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle. German Corner
to those educated in European history.
Train down Moselle valley, stopping at towns such as Cochem; too much Reiseling (?) and red liver sausage
and lying around in the sunshine.
City (D) was found in another country and wow what a fortress! Did you know that there are over 200 banks and over 950 fund institutions here? Highly recommend this wonderful city as a welcome break from the less-ambient terrors of Germany! They played the Shadows and The Bee Gees in the ablutions block to give you some idea (rather than the 80's rock experienced in
Germany). Far more conducive to ablutionary behaviour.
Journey to Town (E) saw changes between vine-lined valleys forests and industrial brown-field flat waste
land. Everything was rusty (ever seen Nemesis at Alton Towers?). Two changes, one at Saarbrucken and one at Mannheim saw us arrive at the oldest university town in Germany. Representative home of Romanticism in Europe, apart from dogs trying to eat the swans that we were feeding. And was that an otter or a very fat rat swimming past the tent?
Tomorrow sees us packing up again for the 5th time and heading off to drive Porsches and build Mercs in
destination (F).
