Cinco de Mayo Stroll and Party on Galveston Island
Cinco de Mayo Stroll and Party on Galveston Island
Part of the reason we were down on Galveston Island was our friends were having a Cinco de Mayo party and this is always a good chance for us to see some of our friends from when we lived in Galveston.
We decided it would be nice to go to find breakfast and then do a walk around the historic downtown Galveston. Because we knew there would be plenty to eat at the party, had a breakfast pastry and coffee and set off on our walk.
There is so much interesting architecture to see as you stroll along. Of course if I had all the money in the world, it would be nice to have a loft above one of the shops in downtown Galveston. Many of the old buildings have businesses on the ground floor and lofts up above. As we walked around it was interesting to see the different types of architecture in the same street. On some of the buildings, they have a plaque signifying the high water mark during Hurricane Ike. It is sobering to see that Galveston had seen under at least 7 foot of water. Some of the older buildings we had passed had plaques saying they had survived the 1900 hurricane. Ahhhhhhh, the pleasure and pitfalls of living in the Hurricane zone!
We also walked over and checked out the Mosquito fleet which is located on the harbor behind the new and larger Joe's Crab Shack. Seemed that there were not as many for sale as I remember. The pelicans were preening on the rocks outside the walkway and we enjoyed their antics. Saw great egret chase away a night heron roosting on one of the boats.
After about hour and a half, we headed on back to help get things ready for the party. The party was very nice and it was great to be able to spend some time visiting with old and new friends.
