I had heared a lot of good things about Chester, so we decided to go there. Unfortunately it was a bit of a grey day (which is nothing unusual in England :) There were supposed to be a lot of Roman remains, like a Roman wall around the city, a heating system and an amphitheatre. All these things sound great but if you are excited to see these remains you will be a bit disappointed.
The wall was renovated so many times that it was hard to recognise the old Roman wall. I think the wall walk took us about 1,5 hours.
The town centre was very nice. A lot of old Tudor buildings and ofcourse the second most photographed clock in Great Britain! The Eastern gate clock. It was made to commemorate Queen Victoria's 60 years on the throne and was quite impressive. I can imagine why people like this town.
I think the bad weather played a big part in my disappointment. As did the following: after we had a great dinner in town we decided to go back to Wolverhampton. But the last train had already left about 9 o'clock! We didn't expect that to happen! So we stranded at that horrible trainstation (at which I had already spend a lot of time when I was returning from Conwy because of all the delays).
So we decided to look for a bed and breakfast. Most of them were closed or had no vacancies (they only tell you that because they don't want to take in any more visitors this late). We walked through the rain for longer than an hour and were getting pretty desperate. The last b&b we went to had no vacancies but we decided to go there anyway to ask if they knew anything else. . It was already 11 pm and the woman opening the door told us that she didn't know any other b&b's. I guess we had a really desperate look in our eyes and looked very pitiful with our clothes being soaking wet. She decided to let us in after all! It appeared she still had a room available! We were so happy, I don't know what we would have done otherwise. I slept very good and the next day we had a big english breakfast. After that we took the train back to Wolverhampton and were very happy to be back again.
