EPITUR!

Oh, no! When I went to download all of the class pictures last night I discovered my camera case was empty! I decided the camera must be in the supply box in the classroom, but I was nervous until I saw it again. This morning we had the opportunity to visit the school that our project recruiter, Herberdh Chicas started. I walked to UNIVO to get the camera and Herberdh and the others picked me up there. What a relief to see it again.

The school is named EPITUR and it focuses on tourism, languages and personal development. I especially wanted to get reacquainted with the 7 scholarship students from last year and meet the 10 new ones this year. We were ushered to the main room upstairs where the scholarship students and their teachers were waiting for us. They had a very nice program beginning with singing the “Star Spangled Banner” and making speeches. Two of the young men played guitar as the group sang “Wake Me When September Ends” -- what a good singing group they are! Vols. Cindy and Karen gave speeches also. These young men and women are grateful for the opportunity to help improve their own lives, the condition of their communities, and ultimately to help their country. We had refreshments, of course, and lots of pictures – a good time was had by EVERYONE.

Then Herberdh took us back to UNIVO for our afternoon classes. Today was “PRACTICE DAY” for performing plays tomorrow. Each group has a good script and everyone is really getting into props, costumes, and acting. Tomorrow will be fun!

Yesterday we started a survey-opinion poll activity. Each teacher developed a question and then surveyed a lot of people for their opinion on some topic. People going by on the balcony were included in the activity. Today we turned the raw data into bar graphs. Some teacher saw the math activity as a welcome change from the language based activities we usually do. They are working in the morning class on multiple intelligences, so this was a good example of how many intelligences (linguistic, interpersonal, logical-mathematical) can be addressed in the same activity. Tomorrow they will present their graphs to the class.

The 3 of us decided we needed pizza, so we got take-out from Pizza Hut. It was VERY good.
