Today was Easter. So we went to a Buddhist temple of course. You see, the temple is where all the cherry blossoms are, so that's where everybody goes. And I mean everybody. There was a beautiful row of cherry blossoms lining each side of the road leading up to the temple. Unfortunately the road was a giant parking lot of cars, taxis, and buses. Lining the road next to these gorgeous trees were stalls selling giant oysters, pink balloons, dancing dolls, corn on the cob, cheap backpacks, grubs (not a typo), and silly hats. Every other stall also had a pig on a spit. Did I mention the drag queens singing on a stage every 50 feet? Yeah, there was a temple too. One of the few, if only, temples to house female monks. But that seemed unimportant next to the mass of cotton candy vendors and whistle-blowing policemen.
So far I like my Korean life. The job is not too difficult and the kids are generally good. Their English is much better than their Japanese counterparts and that makes the job a whole lot easier. In Japan, I could barely hold a conversation with the English teacher. Here I can speak naturally with some 12 year olds.
