My New Home

2004-04-10, Gyeryong, Korea, South

My town is a military town. There's a base nearby, and oh yeah, Korea's version of the Pentagon is just down the street. Most of the residents are military families. Most of my young students are military kids, and most of the adult students are soldiers.

The town has about 30,000 people and most of us live in 15-story apartment blocks. That's kind of sad considering that we're in the countryside and surrounded by stunnning mountain scenery. But you'd never know that looking out my window. I have a view of two monstrous, Orwellian apartment blocks.

The good thing about apartment blocks is that the grocery store, fried chicken place, internet cafe, and workplace are right out the front door. The longest part of my commute is the elevator ride. But if I don't make a real effort to get out, I spend my days within a 200 foot radius.

The town seems nice enough. It has enough stores, neon bars and restaurants, banks, and pharmacies to suffice. There are probably 15 Christian churches in town even though Korea is only 25% Christian. Ever seen a red neon cross? I can see three from my building.

We have three pizza places, a Baskin Robbins, a hamburger joint, a K-Mart, a D-Mart, a post office, and about 10 love hotels.

It's my home for a year.
